Berwyn Township
Peace and
Environmental Referenda
April
8, 2008
A coalition of Green Party and peace activists, including 3rd
Congressional District candidate Jerome Pohlen, have successfully
placed two advisory referenda on the November 4, 2008, general election
ballot for Berwyn Township.
The first measure
reads:
| Shall our
representatives in Congress hold current and former public officials,
and private contractors, accountable for war crimes, including torture
and unprovoked aggression, in connection with the Iraq War? |
The
second reads:
Shall our
elected officials In Illinois take steps to phase out nuclear power in
the state, replacing it with renewable sources such as wind and solar?
|
The
same coalition of activists has placed ballot measures on the Berwyn
Township ballot in previous elections, all of which passed by
substantial margins.
On
February 5, 2008, voters approved another peace initiative by 77%:
|
Shall our representatives in Congress pursue all
available means to limit military funding in Iraq to only that which is
required to bring all U.S. troops home safely?
|
as
well as:
| Shall our
elected representatives at all levels of government enact legislation
and set policies that promote the use and creation of renewable energy
sources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions? |
By an 88% margin. In the 2006 general election voters approved, by 71%,
another Iraq War referendum:
| In order to
halt the continuing loss of human life and resources necessary to meet
human needs at home, shall the U.S. Government immediately begin an
orderly, rapid withdrawal of all military personnel from Iraq,
beginning with the National Guard? |
Congressman Dan Lipinski,
who “represents” most of Berwyn Township, continues to approve funding
requests for the Iraq War.
